Merida International airport increases flights to Mexico city, plans to include Canada and Italy

After January 24, 2013 a new flight from Mexico City will begin to operate at the international airport of Merida “Manuel Crescencio Rejon”. The flight range of connectivity to Yucatán will be extended, announced officials of the airport terminal.

In the framework of a meeting of the Airport Advisory Board headed by the Yucatan Governor Rolando Zapata Bello, the director of the Southeast Airports (Asur), Hector Navarrete Muñoz said the new route Mexico City – Merida will be operated by the airline Volaris, which will depart every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday considered as the days of highest demand.

The ASUR manager explained that this connectivity flight will use aircrafts type A-319 and A-320 with have a capacity of over 150 passengers, that will be bring to Merida flights from Mexico City at 10 pm and return at six o’clock in the morning the next day.

During this meeting, also attended by Merida Mayor Renan Barrera Concha, along with federal and state officials as well as representatives of business organizations, agreed to create a commission that will strengthen inter-sectoral tourist activities, seeking to attract more visitors through new air routes.

During this meeting it was mentioned that ASUR will seek to have international flights from Canadian and Italian air lines through a bidding process.

With this objective on the table, ASUR will set an exhibition booth at the tourism fair held in Madrid, Spain next January 2013.

With this effort in mind, the head of the State Government urged to continue to coordinate efforts to attract more flights, and therefore increase the number of passengers arriving to our state for more dynamism to Yucatan tourism.

In the meeting, which lasted almost an hour Rolando Zapata reported that  1,1000, 000  passengers arrived to Merida Air port during 2012, while cargo operations exceed 16,000 tons of merchandise, out of  this 60% are national products.

Also, in this presentation, it was presented a report of the activities and upgrades that will take place this next year at the Merida International airport, which include the expansion of the taxi routes, the new baggage processing area with the acquisition of an X-ray machine, whose capacity to process revision is twice as much the current demand.

Also it was mentioned that the modernization of the main facade of the airport and the expansion of the waiting rooms to increase the capacity to meet demand until 2023.

Standard of living was also an important factor for survey respondents, thanks to the excellent value and amenities that are available in Mexico’s top retirement destinations.  The country’s fabulous climate is also a huge draw, with warm, sunny temperatures and ocean breezes to be found in many of the country’s most popular cities and towns. 

There is no doubt that the last 20 years have witnessed explosive growth in the number of international visitors who have chosen to make Mexico a permanent home. This change is due in large part to the country’s improved economy, strong political system and viable future prospects for continued growth.
