Almost every American 40 years or older has heard something about retirement outside the US and a lot of the talk is about Mexico. Mexico is preferred in that it is our neighbor to the south and easily accessible. Many US seniors are being forced to take a harder look at this option simply due to economics. These seniors are sitting on the fence looking back to the US and asking for a lifeline to draw them back. The move afoot to migrate south of the border is taking a large step forward and the US government is helping all it can.
Consider the following:
Stage 1 – In the past if a US citizens (especially seniors) decided to move, retire or spend an extended period of time in Mexico, they were considered unpatriotic and scolded for even considering leaving the wonderful and prosperous US for a dirty, poor third world country like Mexico. Result – Shame!
Stage 2 – Recently US citizens (especially seniors) are warned over and over that Mexico is unsafe due to the violence and danger posed by the warring drug cartels. The “black press” on Mexico is factual if these Americans are considering spending their time in the few concentrated areas where the cartels operate and are fighting for the drug smuggling venues. The “black press” seems to forget to mention that the majority of the drugs being smuggled are headed to the greatest area of demand … the US. Result – Threat!
Stage 3 – Now as these citizens (especially seniors) sit there on the fence asking for help, the government is too busy being politicians to help a common, everyday American that helped build the US that they are supposed to be governing. Unless it has political implications or furthers their cause/career, the politicians are deaf to the cries for help. Result – Ignore!
Stage 4 – The final stage coming is when the arrows of increased medical care cost, higher cost of living, Social Security is broke and we will charge you an exit tax if you try to take your money out of the country are being shot directly at you as you sit on that fence. By this time it may be too late to simply hop the border, it may be necessary to sneak out of the US and into Mexico incognito (funny the ironic twist to today’s issues, don’t you think?) Result – go ahead, jump!
